Three orange newts gathered underneath a mushroom on the forest floor.

Forest Floor-Harvard Forest

Pastel on paper

I chose pastels on dark paper because I wanted the efts to look as though they are emerging out of the shadows on the forest floor. When you spot an eft in the forest they have an almost ethereal quality that pastels lend themselves to.

Artist Statement

Red efts, a life phase of the Eastern Newt, are a charismatic species of Harvard Forest. While they are aquatic as larvae and as adults, they have a brief sojourn as terrestrial creatures. My colleague Ben Goulet-Scott photographed the source image.
