Nine species of Calligrapher beetles with varied patterns on their wings are illustrated and displayed in a three by three grid. Each beetle is labeled with a number, which corresponds to its common name listed in a legend at the bottom of the chart.

Meet the Calligrapher Beetles of North America

Watercolor, gouache, and digital composition in Adobe Photoshop

Finding a Moon-Marked Leaf Beetle (a type of Calligrapher beetle) in my garden inspired me to illustrate this chart of Calligrapher beetles. Viewed together, you can compare and appreciate the beautiful ink-blot like markings that led to their name.

A large gray, black, red and white Cecropia moth is painted resting on a poplar tree branch. Also on the branch are the large lime green caterpillar and grayish brown cocoon of this species.

Cecropia Moth Transformation

Acrylic gouache on Arches hot press paper

I painted this piece for a show with the theme “Weird and Wonderful.” Cecropia moths are the largest native moths in North America. The plump caterpillar is 4 inches long with alien-like spiny tubercles, and the adults have a 7 inch wingspan!

Artist Statement

I enjoy combining art and science to research and illustrate subjects from nature. I employ both digital and traditional techniques, and hope that my work inspires an appreciation of the natural world and a desire to protect its rich biodiversity.
