A intricate black and white drawing of a mystical landscape. A line of trees are shown in front of the night sky. A river in the foreground also looks like a starry sky.

Little Bear: Abuelo has a Diné name

Pen and ink

This piece is based on Gabrielle’s grandfather’s childhood as an adopted boy on a Navajo reservation after he lost his Mexican parents at birth. The (Celtic) ogham marks on the stones represent the cultural acquisition of a place that is not yours.

Artist Statement

Gabrielle’s art is founded on meditative mark-marking combined with critical study. She investigates questions of ancestry, ethnicity, and spiritual practice by subverting expectations of landscape.
