A painting of a woman sitting upright, the woman's back faces the viewer. There is a yellow wall, a white window with a sunset, a black and white tiled floor and green houseplant in a brown pot. In the foreground she is wrapped in a red and white blanket and sitting on a blue surface.

“Esta ausencia”/ “This Absence”

India ink and paint marker on canvas

A partially covered woman sits on the edge of her bed. Her lower body is enveloped in colorful sheets, which contrast her melancholy. Through the window we can see the sun setting over a body of water.

Symbiosis

Sharpie on white paper

Symbiosis is an elaborate, free-flowing black-and-white doodle. It depicts fantastical life-forms (reptiles, human-like figures, dinosaurs, fish, birds, anemone, coral reefs, among others) in both mutualistic and parasitic relationships.

Artist Statement

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Manuel is not a trained artist, but has had a life-long passion for painting and for Spanish & Latin American poetry. Doodling is his favorite passive hobby.
