In rectangular surface (5 1/2" x 7 1/2"), large orange red sun shape is center top in a Naples yellow tinged sky. Bottom half is white representing snow; its center is embossed (raised) a bit diagonally at midpoint; in middle of the snow area, a light gray horizontal path helps to visually secure nine gray, brown, and black limbed trees scattered across the space.

Winter Sun

Woodcut (on Fabriano paper; gouache)

In NY past studied with late printmaker Ansei Uchima. Orange red sun symbolizes grandeur of sight I saw often as child in Japan by the inland sea or in expanse of the countryside. That sun now transposed into a N.E. winter.

Within canvas 10 1/4" square, are layers of paint. Main background is white; abstracted figure shape 9" long in ultramarine/cobalt blue lies diagonally top right to bottom left within outline of orange square border. Surface is rough as there are many layers of paint; underpainting on background and figure shape visible due to purposed scratch marks.

Blue Man (from studies of “Blue man” series)

Acrylic paint on canvas

Piece evolved from sketches/thoughts in journal upon seeing hundreds of miniature ancient Egyptian funerary figurines of faience, strikingly beautiful in turquoise blue, at the Vatican Museum. I used, however, a darker blue.
